While the ancient city of Ephesus attracts millions of visitors each year, the UNESCO-listed ruins of adjacent Pergamum are ideal for anyone wishing to get away from the crowds and explore further away.
Pergamon or Pergamum is the current Greek name for Pergamon. Pergamos, in Mysia, was a wealthy and powerful ancient Greek city.

Pergamon was the northernmost of the seven Asian churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. The city is built around a 335-meter-high andesite mesa known as the Acropolis.

The north, west, and east sides of this mesa all slope down abruptly, but three natural terraces on the south side give a path to the summit. The Selinus River runs through the city to the west of the acropolis, while the Ketios River runs to the east.
