In the first century BC, Ephesus was the second greatest city in the Roman Empire, with a population of approximately 250.000 people. It was the world's second-largest city, trailing only Rome. Ephesus was a port city as well. And only marbel was used to construct this massive city. Did you know Ephesus was the world's largest amphitheatre, with over 25.000 seats? Goddess Nike, Hadrian Gate, Library of Celcius (the third largest library), Marbel Street, and Harbour Street are also worth seeing.
The Temple of Artemis, or Artemision, was a Greek temple devoted to the goddess Artemis. It was also known as the Temple of Diana. It was one of the world's seven wonders and was located in Ephesus.
The House of the Virgin Mary is a site where many people believe Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent her final years of life. She was believed to arrive in Ephesus with St. John and dwell there until her Assumption or Dormition in the years 37-45 CE.
