Ephesus ancient city
Ephesus was a Greek settlement on the Ionian peninsula, three kilometres southwest of modern-day Selçuk in Turkey's zmir province. It was founded by Attic and Ionian Greek colonists on the site of the former Arzawan capital in the 10th century BC.
Ephesus is one of the seven Asiatic churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation. It's possible that John's Gospel was written here. Several Christian Councils took place in the city in the fifth century.
The Temple of Artemis, or Artemision, was a Greek temple devoted to an ancient, local form of the goddess Artemis. It was also known as the Temple of Diana (associated with Diana, a Roman goddess).
