The House of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic shrine in Turkey, situated near Ephesus and 7 kilometres from Selçuk.
Ephesus ancient city
Ephesus was a Greek settlement on the Ionian peninsula, three kilometres southwest of modern-day Selçuk in Turkey's zmir province. It was founded by Attic and Ionian Greek colonists on the site of the former Arzawan capital in the 10th century BC.
Ephesus is one of the seven Asiatic churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation. It's possible that John's Gospel was written here. Several Christian Councils took place in the city in the fifth century.
Sirince is a community of 600 people in the zmir province of Turkey, about 8 kilometres east of Selçuk and approximately 8 kilometres west of Ephesus. The village's surroundings have a long history reaching back to the Hellenistic period (323-31 BC).
Ersoy and Gurler discovered pottery near the settlement in 2001 and 2002, indicating the presence of seven communities and nine farmsteads going back to ancient and mediaeval periods. The remnants of multiple Roman aqueducts may be seen on the route up, since the hamlet was a vital water supply for ancient Ephesus.
